For 19 years, Sharon and Melon have been raised by different parents though they were conceived and born identical twins.
The entire mystery started some 19 years ago when two mothers (Rosemary Onyango and Angelina Omina) went to Kakamega Provincial General Hospital, now Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya for the delivery of their babes. Without any knowledge of the blunder that has happened at the hospital, Rosemary went home carrying with her Melon and Melvis as a new mother of the twins, and Angeline with Sharon.
Melvis and Sharon found home with their new parents and grew up happily without knowing that their respective guardians are not their biological parents.
After completing basic schools in separate communities, they both surprisingly received secondly school admissions from two different schools in the same county. Melon was admitted to Friends Secondary School Kongoni, while Sharon attends Shikoti Secondary School both in Kakamega County.
It was at this point that many people who came in contact with the two different students recognize that they are identical which is unlikely that they have no biological relationship.
‘A good samaritan’ gave a hint to the girls which let to their first connecting and contacting on Facebook. Later, Melon and her ‘twin’ sister Melvis travelled to look for Sharon after their initial communication on Facebook.
The sisters thereafter made a promise that they will forever keep a bound family relationship. “From the moment we met, we knew we had a connection… we felt like sisters. Even if DNA tests say something different, we will always be sisters,”
DNA Test and Results
When the news came to the noticed of the parents, Richard Olukhakha and Rosemary Onyango, parents of Melon and Melvis, said their world has turned upside down upon discovering a teenager who looked exactly like one of their daughters. On her side, Angeline recounted her deep love for her daughter and how she can’t imagine if it turns out that she is going to lose her. “I love this child so much and I have worked hard to raise her. Even these odd jobs that I do, I do for her. If she asks me for something, I always struggle to give her,” Angeline said.
However, both families agreed to a DNA test and they vow that the result will not be a condition to separate them but rather will bring them into a new union of a bigger family.
The two girls Sharon and Melon were finally confirmed to be identical twins by a result of a DNA test release on Friday 14th June 2019.
According to the DNA analysis conducted by Lancet Kenya (PLK), Sharon Mitekwa and Melon Lutenyo share identical DNA profiles with 23 allelic loci tested showing 100 per cent perfect match which is consistent with the two being biologically identical twins.
The DNA results have also revealed Rosemary as the mother of Sharon and Melon. “Rosemary Onyango cannot be excluded as the biological mother of Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo, who have a compatible obligatory maternal allelic profile with a 99.99 per cent probability,” read the findings.
Melvis, who has been living with Melon as fraternal twins has been confirmed to be the daughter of Angeline Omina and Wilson Luttah, who has been living in Nairobi with Sharon Mathias as their daughter. “Melvis Imbaya exhibits a compatible obligatory maternal and paternal allelic profile with that of Angeline Omina and Wilson Lutah, respectively, Thus Angeline and Wilson cannot be respectively be excluded as the biological mother and father of Melvis Imbaya with a probability percentage of 99.99 per cent,” the DNA analysis further stated.
